Racers will charge out from Lazy Dog, enter the residential Riviera canal

and paddle right through the heart of Cayo Hueso aka “Bone Island,”

winding through narrow red mangrove tunnels before paddling out in to the picturesque Gulf of Mexico, then racers will slice down Cow Key Channel and back to Lazy Dog for the FINISH!

WPA Level 1 Water Safety Training 

Friday, January 26th: 8am – 2pm

The WPA provides world-class water safety and SUP instruction designed to educate and prepare instructors to teach paddlers at every level how to have a fun and safe experience on the water. Our expert staff will certify instructors to teach a consistent and proven curriculum of fundamental technique, water dynamics and water safety appropriate for all water environments.

Completing the course is just one step in your WPA Water Safety and SUP certification; each participant must also meet the following minimum requirements:

  • CPR/First Aid certificate: Must be completed as a CLASS FORMAT through either the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. No other certifications will be accepted.
  • Proof of liability insurance coverage
  • $75 per year to maintain WPA instructor certificate
  • 80% or better on WPA’s certification exam

 Level 2 SUP Yoga/WPA Instructor Training 

Friday & Saturday

Pre requisites: One year WPA certified

200 hour RYT

1 year SUP Yoga teaching experience

3-5 years paddling experience

CPR and First Aid

This teacher training will expand upon the knowledge and skills acquired through previous experience and training.

Emphasis will be placed upon teaching skills in the area of but not limited to:

  •  Communication & Teacher Language
  • SUP Skills Set and Technique
  • Class Development
  • Water Safety and Boating Regulation
  • Equipment Repair and Handling
  • CPR and First Aid

Students will also be tested on physical endurance and rescue techniques as well.

After successful completion of this course, trainees will have the knowledge and ability to set up their own trainings for SUP Yoga and WPA Level 1 Certifications.

The 21st Annual Key West Paddle Classic

Lazy Dog PaddleYoga/WPA Level 1 Teacher Training.
The course is geared towards introducing yoga practitioners and yoga teachers to the sport of SUP. We have been successfully training men and women from all over the country for the last 5 years. The Lazy Dog PaddleYoga adventure began in 2008 and is still running strong.

The training will cover, but is not limited to: SUP equipment overview, SUP skills and technique, Adapting Yoga to SUP and PaddleYoga class development, water safety and rescue, chart exploration and weather knowledge, marketing tips and business application.

World Paddle Association Instructor’s Certification

$295 Gets you certified!
Lazy Dog will be holding a World Paddle Association SUP Certification Class in Key West on Thursday January 28, 2016 from 9a-3p. Check in is at 8:30am.
The WPA Water Safety curriculum includes classroom and on water instruction as part of the water safety education classes that includes:
• Board and Equipment Purchasing
• SUP Etiquette
• Safety Planning
• Injury Prevention
• Water Dynamics
• Boating Laws
• Board & Paddling Skills
• Rescue techniques
• Water Safety information
All instructors who complete a World Paddle Association Water Safety class are also required to complete the following criteria to satisfy the certification requirements. An instructor may attend a WPA Water Safety class if have not met the following CPR/First aid and insurance criteria:
• CPR/First Aid certificate (class format through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross)
• Liability insurance coverage (we will send you information with lower insurance rates only available for WPA instructors)
• $75 per year to maintain WPA instructor certificate (first year fee included in the first class)
• 80% on certification exam
• WPA member
• Marketing: instructors will be posted by level and region on the WPA website
• Insurance: discounted rates for individual and group insurance
• Backed by a structured organization with the WPA and the WPA Board of Instructors
• Updates with curriculum supplied to all WPA instructors
This is a one day class to meet your requirements for a WPA instructor class I certification. All instructors attending must adhere to the guidelines set forward by the WPA at www.worldpaddleassociation.com. Feel free to pack a lunch. There is a full service restaurant on premise however we will conduct more of a lunch and learn style lunch instead of taking a lunch break.
If for some reason you have to cancel and cannot attend you will not lose your deposit. We will apply your deposit to the next WPA class that you can attend.
Please note that along with your credentials that you have submitted on your application you MUST be able to maneuver and paddle a board in a confident and comfortable fashion. The WPA classes are tailored to the sport of stand up paddling. Your certification will be delayed and/or withheld if the instructors feel that your skill level is not up the standards needed to teach lessons as a WPA Instructor.

Hemingway Days 5K run & 3 mile Paddle Board race

Dates for 2018 TBA Paddle Race starts at 6pm, 5K starts at 7:30pm

Do both or do just one.

The popular 5K Run (and Walk) is the oldest ongoing race in Key West, and for the fourth year also combines a Paddleboard Race, which has grown tremendously. Entrants are encouraged to sign up early and can reserve paddle boards with Lazy Dog Outfitters. At 6 p.m., the paddle board race starts at the island’s Southernmost Beach, 1405 Duval St. The course is three miles on the Atlantic Ocean then finishes back at the beach.

Then the 5K Run will begin at 7:30 at the Southernmost Point in the continental United States, which overlooks the ocean at Whitehead and South streets. The fast, flat 3.1-mile course takes runners through picturesque Old Town Key West past landmarks including the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum.

In true Key West style, there’s an after-party back at the beach by the Southernmost Beach Cafe., with awards, food, libations, raffles, and a silent auction.

On race day, the registration booth will be open from 3-7 p.m. at the Southernmost Hotel. Race packets can be picked up there. The race will be chip timed.


Lazy Dog is offering an Intro to Stand-Up Paddling Class for the Hemingway Days 5k & Lazy Dog Paddle Board Race.

Classes will be held at Lazy Dog, in the Hurricane Hole Marina, Stock Island on Thursday, July 21st. and Friday, July 22nd. Class times are 5pm-6:30pm.

Learn from our WPA certified instructors. We are delighted to share our knowledge with you to help you have a safe and successful race experience. Whether you are a first time paddler or a paddler looking to brush up on your paddle stroke technique and gain some pointers before race day, this class is for you!

Lazy Dog Race the Reef

September 9, 2018 Key West, Florida  (most likely this date)

Annual event on the weekend after Labor day.


Step 1:  Enjoy a sunrise sail out the the reef
Step 2:  We throw your paddle board overboard at the reef
Step 3: Jump in the water, get on your board and paddle race back to Key West

Race is approximately a 6 miler open ocean race (course may vary depending on weather). Sebago Catamarans located at the Historic Seaport District will take racers out to the start line on the reef. Racers will jump off boat with their board and will race to Higgs Beach, Key West. Awards immediately following on the beach. Food and drink supplied by Salute Restaurant. Transportation back to Sebago (if you left your car there) will be provided by Lazy Dog. Board transportation will not be available. CASH bar for beer & cocktails! Transport to the reef is sponsored by Sebago Catamarans!
